??? the attachment does not exist anymore

Postby izi » Sun Feb 19, 2017 5:26 pm

today when I attempted (repeatedly) to retrieve the file I had earlier uploaded as an attachment
oct-28-fig-translated-working-on-fig-os-2-3-t64.html

The selected attachment does not exist anymore.

The file /www/freeforums.org/subdomains/communities/user_data/1045000/unofficialdistros/attachments/2_869e252e60f0be40b22e025c60082b91 does not exist.

confusingly, "downloaded nn times" gets incremented with each download attempt

I do still have a local copy of the fighelpviewer.py but... WTF?
Has the forum administrator enforced a setting so that attachments "expire" after a set period?
Surely it's not a global/forced setting, considering that I've retrieved much older attachments from various other freeforums.org -hosted forums.

Ah, perhaps all attachements are similarly affected throughout unofficialdistros.freeforums.org

I skimmed the forum index pages looking for "paperclip" icon
mkfigos-1-7-very-large-t30.html
identical "no longer exists" message when trying to retrieve the attachment there too.

** ALL ATTACHMENTS RESTORED **

UPDATE TO THE UPDATE-- it was not caused by maintenance. they seem to really be doing everything they can at freeforums:

Hello everyone,

I'd like to give an update on images and attachments. We are aware that you are anxiously waiting for news.
As you know, the server that holds the images and attachments experienced issues due to hardware failure while the items were in the process of being imported to the new servers.

We had several delays, in part due to the Holidays, and in part due to waiting for hardware that was needed for the fix.
Once everything was in place, the data extraction appeared to be much more complicated that originally thought.
The disks were handed to a team of data recovery experts. However, the promised time that it would take to recover the data elapsed, with no results.

Not wanting to give up, our management contacted Dell for help. They suggested a highly skilled data recovery specialist in Texas. The disks are now on a plane to Texas, with overnight shipping.

Please rest assured that we continue to work on this.

I will post here the very minute we receive news from the data recovery experts.

note in response to an in-thread question: ive looked at the settings page for attachments and i cant even find a setting for that. you can limit size (both image dimensions and in bytes) but theres nothing about dates.

for the convenience(?) of anyone who might find it as such... heres what i believe is a comprehensive list of attachments on this forum, and their status (as of this thread post.)

it looks like freeforums has (hopefully in a little glitch they will fix this week?) lost all the attachments to the forum, up until a date sometime this month.

this list will not necessarily be updated daily. so far, only one attachment is available. (i dont think that one ever went down.)

**special thanks to izi for pointing this out, and also to ally, who had added most of these files to the internet archive already.

As I mentioned in the OP, I didn't "lose" anything (still had a copy of my uploaded files), but I thank you for the followup.

i know it bothered the heck out of me-- *i* didnt have a copy of your script on the forum, and having to re-upload everything else wouldve been a real pita.

your script is now archived, should it fall off the forum again. though i have to say, as long as it took the freeforums people did a lot more than i anticipated anyone doing. thanks for being the canary of that coal mine, and im certainly glad it worked out (and that it wasnt my doing.)
